Machu Picchu, one of Peru´s most popular tourist destinations, had more than 1,100,000 visitors in 2015. This shows an increase from the previous year, and the specific figures will be released this week.
Chief Juan Carlos Nieto claims that this famous Inca City receives an increasing interest among Peruvians and foreigners alike. Nieto hopes that the many tourists that visit will explore the many facets of Machu Picchu while visiting.
Machu Picchu, a 37,000-hectare site, boasts 4,187 species and 12 ecological systems. It was declared as a Historic Sanctuary 35 years ago and now protects much history and biodiversity in the area.
In addition to Machu Picchu, the Sanctuary contains 190 monuments. These attractions and other new routes that have been found in the past 35 years are working to be promoted within the Sanctuary.
As each year passes and new parts of the Sanctuary are revealed, the number of tourists that visit the Machu Picchu site are ever increasing.
