When most people think of trekking to Machu Picchu, they think of the Inca Trail. However, there is another route that provides the challenging and beautiful experience of hiking through the gorgeous Andes Mountains.
This alternate route, the Salkantay trek, brings you to the foot of the Salkantay Mountain, which has a height of 6,271 meters. In Quechua, Salkantay means ´´Savage Mountain´´ as it is one of the highest peaks in the Andes and higher than any other peak in North America.
Salkantay begins in a small village in the Sacred Valley and passes by numerous Andean communities. The trail provides a view of three mountains: Salkantay, Humantay, and Huayanay. Eventually, the trail brings backpackers to Aguas Calientes, the town just below Machu Picchu.
Although not the famous Inca Trail, the Salkantay trek is a wonderful alternative for backpackers who are looking for a challenge and a beautiful adventure!
