The city of Puno is situated on the shores of the famous Lake Titicaca, but just 35 kilometers from the center of the city, is located the beautiful and far less famous Umayo Lagoon. Located opposite of the archaeological complex of Sillustani this lake is surrounded by swamps and seasonally flooded grasslands.
In addition to discovering the intriguing landscape, travelers may also encounter the flora and fauna of the Atuncolla district. Here, where the lagoon is located, animals like vicunas, vizcachas, geese, mallards, tiquechos, among others, are easily spotted in those parts.
The area is perfect for nature lovers and photographers, but others travelers can also participate in experiential tourism near Lake Umayo by getting to know the way of life of the inhabitants of Atuncolla, who are prepared to receive tourists and even house them. Travelers can also participate in the planting, production of carpets from alpaca or sheep, guinea pig breeding, hiking, boating, etc.
