The National Chamber of Tourism has discovered that the majority of tourists gather their information from the internet, particularly reviews posted by other tourists. As TripAdvisor is a major source of information for many travelers, its declaration of Machu Picchu as the best landmark out of the world´s 25 best is an important win for tourism in Peru.
The National Chamber of Tourism asserts that it plans to expand tourism in Peru through a variety of social networks. In this way, they hope to promote other areas in Peru as appealing travel destinations.
Because of the increase in publicity, officials expect an overload of tourists to flood to Machu Picchu. After Machu Picchu as #1 on the list, other landmarks mentioned were the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center in the United Arab Emirates, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, St. Peter´s Basilica in Italy, and the Taj Mahal in India.
