Tourists Encouraged to Help Discover Rare Species

With so many species of insects yet to be discovered, approximately 10 to 20 million by some estimates by researchers, tourists are now being encouraged to take part in expeditions to discover these species.

Refugio Amazonas, or Rainforest Expeditions in English, is a 32-bedroom lodge located just outside of the Tambopata National Reserve not too far from Puerto Maldonado in Peru. No scientific background or credentials are necessary to be part of the expeditions and one can join at any stage of the research project.

Using certain light-producing instruments, members of the expedition attract insects and then collect and deliver them to the Natural History Museum in Lima. Specialists, including entomologists, study the samples to verify the discovery of new species. Seven new species of insect were discovered in the year 2016 alone.
