The unconventional yet unforgettable route to Machu Picchu: Salkantay

When most people think of trekking to Machu Picchu, they think of the Inca Trail. However, there is another route that provides the challenging and beautiful experience of hiking through the gorgeous Andes Mountains.

This alternate route, the Salkantay trek, brings you to the foot of the Salkantay Mountain, which has a height of 6,271 meters. In Quechua, Salkantay means ´´Savage Mountain´´ as it is one of the highest peaks in the Andes and higher than any other peak in North America.

The Famous Inca Trail will be closed in February

The Inca Trail is one of the most well-known treks worldwide. During the majority of the year, most tourists must reserve a spot for this trail months in advance. Countless foreigners flock to Peru to camp along this trek in the beautiful Andes Mountains and explore ancient Incan sites.

José Carlos Nieto, the head of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, confirmed that the Inca Trail will indeed be closed during February. He asserts that companies have been aware of this for a long time and that tourists still have many other options to arrive at Machu Picchu, such as train, bus, or other treks. (more…)
