Puno expects 60,000 tourists during Candelaria festivity

The region of Puno is prepared to celebrate the Virgen de la Candelaria festivity. It is one of the most fascinating celebrations in Peru.

The leading day of the Candelaria Festival is the 2nd of February, but the activities continue until the middle of the month.

In the meanwhile, the festival will feature a lot of dancers and musicians in fancy clothes.

The Regional Directorate of Foreign Trade and Tourism believes that Puno will receive more than 60.000 visitors who will participate in the Virgen de la Candelaria festivity. (more…)

Puno celebrates 350th anniversary: What to do and where to go

The south-Peruvian city of Puno is known for its proximity to Lake Titicaca and is said to be the capital of Peruvian folklore. This can be seen during the various celebrations of saints when locals dress up in traditional costumes to dance and to play their century-old regional songs. Soon there is a new reason for a celebration: on November 4th, 2018, Puno celebrates it’s 350 anniversary.

Puno: Capital of Peruvian Folklore

Last weekend, Puno celebrated the last days of the Candelaria Festival. Puno, also called the Capital of Peruvian Folklore, host this big event with over 350 different dances. The dances as well as music and art of this region show the combination of Peruvian traditions and influences from abroad.

Oe of the most well-known typical dances is „La Diablada“. La Diablada is a symbolic Peruvian dance, representing the Andean-Christian syncretism and the battle between good and evil.

Dakar 2018: Dutch competitors receive help from community in Puno

On the route between Imata (Arequipa) and Mañaza (Puno), three Dutch competitors of Dakar 2018 noticed damage to their vessel.

The local community of Tincopalca, a small village belonging to the district of Santa Lucía, immediately prepared a place where pilot Richard De Groot, his co-pilot Beelen Gerardus and mechanic Johannes Hulsebosch could stay overnight.

Residents noticed the smoke of the vessel as it stopped 30 meters outside Tincopalca. Since a key spare part was missing (more…)

Guinness World Records: Puno’s Alpaca Fiber Finest in World

Alpaca fiber, with a fineness rating of 13.1 microns, was recorded in the Guinness World Record as the finest in the world at the recent Fecasam 2017 Livestock Fair held in the Puno region of Peru.

Fibers from the two specimens of alpaca breeds, Huacaya and Suri, were considered in the official book of the Guinness World Record as the finest in the world. Prior to the heated competition, a parade was carried out in the Plaza de Armas of Macusani, widely viewed as the “alpaca capital”.

Following the Belmond Hiram Bingham Luxury Train, the high-end hotel and leisure company Belmond Ltd. will soon launch its second luxury train: the Belmond Andean Explorer.

World Congress on Quinoa Peru Bound

The World Congress on Quinoa is Peru bound. The city of Puno, in Southern Peru, will host the event in March of this year.

The Congress will focus on the promotion of quinoa in global markets as a cultural symbol of Peru. Furthermore, the Congress will discuss importance of quinoa in ameliorating hunger in the Andean region.

Peru regularly competes with Bolivia for the title of biggest producer of quinoa. In 2016, Peru exported 33,778 tons of quinoa, while Bolivia exported 26,000 tons.

Earthquake in Puno

An earthquake has hit the city of Puno and Lake Titicaca with a magnitude of 6. Eight repetitions with a bit lower magnitude, between 3.8 and 4.3 on the Richter scale, hit the region again on Saturday.

At 1:09 pm, 60 kilometres east of Lampa, another earthquake with a magnitude of 3.8 hit Peru last Saturday.

In addition, a girl of five years died in a collapsed house in the damaged areas of Vila Vila, Ocuviri and Santa Lucia.

Puno Celebrates its 348th Anniversary

Puno, a city in the south of Peru, recently celebrated its 348th Anniversary with many typical rituals and festivities.

The main event was a reenactment of the Legend of Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, an Incan couple that helped to found the Inca Empire and were the first rulers of the civilization.

The reenactment began with the couple on Uros, the floating islands on Lake Titicaca, along with some locals and enthusiastic tourists.

The participants, all dressed in typical Incan costumes, journeyed from the islands to Puno´s port on 60 rafts. (more…)

National Alpaca Day!

August 1st marks the celebration of National Alpaca Day in Peru! Many people gathered to celebrate the famous Andean animal.

Celebrations took place in Macusani, which is known as ´´Peru´s Alpaca capital´´ and is located close to Puno.

The festival included the traditional Señalacuy ceremony, a parade of alpacas, wool spinning competitions and more. The region´s leaders and the local producers also took part in the celebration.
Furthermore, the Regional Agricultural offices in Puno also honored the alpaca animal with a fair that displayed the various alpaca producers in the area. (more…)

Peru will be the film set for the show “Check In”

Peru was chosen as the place to shoot the second season of the popular online show “Check In”. This show is produced by Sixto George, a Puerto Rican producer and by Arnaldo Santiago, a travel blogger.

“Check In” will be broadcasted by the website:, the second most visited news website in the country. This website promotes tourist destinations by showing interaction between cultures in a funny way.

The film crew will stay in Peru from the 22nd until the 31st of July and will film in Lima, Cusco and Puno.

Peru’s Travel Mart kicks off promo in Panama

The Peru Travel Mart is the ideal platform to promote the Peruvian products and to close deals with wholesalers and tour operators. This event will take place this year May 13-16 for the 23rd time, and will take place in the Lima Convention Center.

The exports and tourism promotion board (PromPeru) together with the commercial office of Peru (OCEX) started promoting the event with an informative workshop which will be held in Panama City.

Both the OCEX and PromPeru demonstrated the benefits of attending this special event. (more…)
