Frog Species Discovered in Peru

A new frog species was recently discovered in Peru! The discovery was made in the Communal Reserve called Amarakaeri.

The new species was found to be poisonous, hence its name “Ameerega shihuemoy,” which means poisonous frog in the local language.

This frog is quite small, sizing under 3 cm. They are identified with their vibrant colors, marking them as poisonous in the animal world.

Scientists seek to continue to promote the protection of this area, and it is the home to new species that are fighting to survive. (more…)

Natural Areas in Peru to be protected

The State-run National Service of Natural Protected Areas insists that it aims to protect four areas in Peru. They will do this by putting them on the Green List of Protected Areas of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Being on this Green List ensures that the conservation and management of these areas is priority, and that recognition is given for the success of these sustainable sites.

The small-eared zorro has been spotted in Peru!

In 1983, a dog with short ears appeared and scientists deemed it a ´´small-eared zorro.´´ First appearing in the Amazon in 1987, it hasn´t been sighted in a long time. In fact, in 2013, it was put on the List of Threatened Species.

However, Peru´s National Service of Natural Protected Areas and Frankfurt Zoological Society-Peru recently made an amazing discovery. They had set up cameras in various regions of Peru, and discovered a sighting of this rare animal on one of the cameras. (more…)
