Gastronomy Arequipa One of the Best of South America

CNN Travel has recently published a list with the best food destinations in the world. And one of the destinations on the list is the Peruvian city of Arequipa. Arequipa, also nicknamed ‘the White City’ is praised for its distinctive food, which is a blend of Peruvian food and food from elsewhere.

To wit, Arequipa’s gastronomy is a fusion between centuries-old pre-Columbian recipes, the ones of the Incas and later with the ones of Spain as well. This means that the cuisine got its influence from many different sources (more…)

Lima´s food fair “Mistura” to conquer the international market

Every year the gastronomic fair “Mistura” is held in Lima, presenting cooking shows and offering the best of Peruvian food to visitors. The fair is organized by the Peruvian Society of Gastronomy (Apega), a nonprofit association founded by the famous Peruvian chef Gaston Acurio.

Mistura is gaining more and more popularity and has chances to expand on an international level next year. Possibly the food fair will be held in Santiago (Chile), Cordova (Argentina), Bogota (Colombia), Miami, and New York (United States), as part of their efforts to conquer the international market. Peru Identified to have Potential for Tourism and Gastronomy

Brazil´s Tourism Minister, Henrique Aves, and El Salvador´s Tourism Minister, Napoleon Duarte, indicated that Peru has serious potential in its tourism industry. They both highlighted the ever-increasing popularity of Peruvian cuisine at the 2016 International Tourism Fair.

Both Brazil and El Salvador expressed the desire for friendship with Peru, especially now that it boasts of amazing tourist sites along with a growing gastronomy.

Aves and Duarte complimented Peru on its capitalization of its resources and its growing tourism industry. (more…)

Peruvian Squash & Quinoa Soup in Canada

“Peruvian Squash & Quinoa Soup” has been recently introduced to Canadian consumers through Loblaws supermarket chain, which is comprised of over 2,000.

The said product —prepared and packed in Canada— is made of Peruvian ingredients, such as “quinoa” and yellow chili peppers, and responds to the growing demand for Peru’s gastronomic and agro-industrial products.

This products is being promoted by Peru’s Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry through its Toronto-based Trade Office (OCEX Toronto). (more…)

First London Pisco Sour Week this February

Various Peruvian restaurants in London worked together to organize the first London Pisco Sour Week ever.

The initiative, abbreviated as LPSW, is created as an extension of Peru’s Pisco Sour day that is celebrated every year on the first Saturday of February and will take place from the first to the eighth of February. The goal is to increase the spirit’s consumption and to promote at the same time the Peruvian gastronomy.

Culinary Lima among the world’s smartest cities

National Geographic Travel Magazine says Lima is the world’s 16th smartest city. The capital of Peru outsmarts cities such as Amsterdam, Bogota, Buenos Aires, Kigali, Mexico city, Seoul, Taipei and Vancouver. According to National Geographic Lima is the World’s Most Edible Burg because of its rich gastronomy influenced by a wide variety of other ethnic cuisines.

José Andrés, chef and restaurateur, says on the magazine’s website: “As a chef, I’ve always been fascinated to see not only how food can be a bridge between cultures but also its connection with history and politics”. (more…)

Peru’s Mistura Food Festival attracts up to 30 000 foreign visitors

Mistura Food Festival in Lima, Peru, became since its first edition in 2008 Latin America’s largest gastronomic fair.

The fair planning committee expects that more than 30 000 foreigners will visit Peru in September to attend the fair this year.

According to the head of Mistura’s Tourism Committee, Manuel del Solar, the majority of these visitors from abroad will attend for professional reasons, such as professional chefs, food journalists, researchers and culinary students. Also representatives from various international companies have confirmed their visit.

Traditional Peruvian cuisine Cultural Heritage

The traditional Peruvian cuisine will apply to become an Intagible Cultural Heritage in 2015 as it merits its place on the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO)’s landmark list.

“What we aim for 2015 is to prepare all needed documentation to request UNESCO to include the Peruvian gastronomy in the list,” said Luis Castillo Butters. Peru’s Deputy Minister of Culture and Cultural Industries.

He has already formally discussed the proposal to apply the World Heritage  with the Society of Gastronomy (Apega). According to the Peruvian goverment (more…)

Lima, a new gastronomic mecca in the world

Lima – the capital of Peru – is now considered to be a new gastronomy mecca for the entire world. This was stated by the prestigious British journal The Economist, confirming that 7 out of the 15 best gourmst retaurants in Latin America are located in Lima!

The journalist highlights Peru’s cultural fusion reflected in its hauted cuisine which is being exported now all over the world.

The booming growth in global popularity is based on the diverse range of inputs, from the many varieties of fruits and vegetables to healthy grains like quinoa. (more…)

2nd Peruvian gastronomic festival “Taste of Peru” in Dubai

Following great success last year, Dubai now hosts the second annual Festival Taste of Peru, February 26 until March 1.

This event – organized by Promperu (the Trade, Tourism and Investment Office of Peru) in Dubai – will showcase different gastronomic marvels of Peru including causa, anticucho, empanadas and ceviche,along with the well known Peruvian cocktail called pisco sour.

Taste of Peru has also been added to Dubai Food Carnival’s roster of events. (more…)

New Peruvian cookbook published

Because of the worldwide popularity of gastronomic tours a Peruvian travel operator, published his book in which they describe all the typical flavors and ingredients used in the Peruvian cuisine such as rice, potatoes, onions, the different kinds of meat and the 3 types of Peruvian peppers (the yellow, the red and the rocoto red).

Besides this, the book includes as well 32 recipes of the typical Peruvian dishes as the famous ceviche and ajiaco de papas.
