Latin Grammy Award for Peru’s favorite singer: Eva Ayllón

On Wednesday 13 November, the 20th release of the Latin Grammy Awards took place, together with the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, which confers prices for greatness in music. One of the beneficiaries is the appreciated Peruvian singer Eva Ayllón.

Through her remarkable artistic meaning to Latin music all through her artistic progress, the admired Afro-Peruvian “Voice of Peru” obtained the award.

Gastronomy Arequipa One of the Best of South America

CNN Travel has recently published a list with the best food destinations in the world. And one of the destinations on the list is the Peruvian city of Arequipa. Arequipa, also nicknamed ‘the White City’ is praised for its distinctive food, which is a blend of Peruvian food and food from elsewhere.

To wit, Arequipa’s gastronomy is a fusion between centuries-old pre-Columbian recipes, the ones of the Incas and later with the ones of Spain as well. This means that the cuisine got its influence from many different sources (more…)

Pope to Eat Ceviche during Visit to Peru

Ceviche, the flagship dish of Peru and Peruvian cuisine, will be one of the dishes that Pope Francisco will taste during his visit to the country between January 18 and 21.

The Apostolic Nuncio in Peru, Nicola Girasoli, reported that, based on the humility and simplicity that characterizes him, the Supreme Pontiff always asks that typical dishes of the country he visits be included. Pork Festival to Take Place Next Week Near Lima

From October 13th to October 15th, the Fifth Annual Chancho al Palo Festival outside of Lima will take place in the town of Huaral.

It is expected that about thirty thousand people will attend the event which will feature 50 exhibitors, all of which are required to prepare the famous “chancho al palo”, or roasted pork, as a way to celebrate the tradition behind the popular dish.

Apart from the main attraction of being able to bask in the deliciousness that surrounds them, spectators will be able to enjoy modern and traditional music and several art shows. (more…)

Peruvian Restaurant Becomes First in World to Receive Ecofriendly Title

Ámaz, a restaurant located in the Miraflores neighborhood of Lima, has become the first restaurant in the world to receive the Forests for All Forever (FSC) certification. The award recognizes businesses that promote local communities and the conservation of forest ecosystems.

For over twenty years, the international nonprofit Forests for All Forever has helped to conserve forests and the populations that depend on them.

Festival Highlights Special Peruvian Breads

Cookies filled with soy and the so-called “Pan Pachacútec”, were some of the products that were offered during the “Festival leaves with bread and sweet”, that took place from September 8-10 in La Molina.

The festival, organized by the Peruvian Association of Entrepreneurs of Bakery and Pastry (Aspan) highlighted the presence of the bakery of the Peruvian Navy, with its famously large Pachacútec bread measuring 40 cm long and weighing 250 grams. New Show Highlights Peru´s Culinary Process

A recently released episode of the new series from Viceland´s “Huang´s World” traveled to Lima to explore the city´s rich eclectic cuisine and to understand its rise to the top of the Latin American culinary world.

Eddie Huang, a chef and restaurateur from New York City, travels the world in the new show where he learns about the country´s identity and history through its gastronomy. The show is very lighthearted but still delves into serious issues as Huang is a former stand-up comic as well as attorney. It also features some of the best chefs in each country (more…)

Peruvian Sandwich Shop Opens in Chicago Outskirts

A new Peruvian sandwich shop has opened up in the outskirts of Chicago. The chef, Cesar Chang, is a native of Peru who decided to show the United States what Peruvian food is all about.

The name of Chang´s restaurant is Sanguche, which is the word in Peru used to refer to sandwich. Fittingly, his restaurant is modeled after the traditional Peruvian sandwich shop, and offers typical selections like their best-selling lomo saltado sandwich.

Lima´s food fair “Mistura” to conquer the international market

Every year the gastronomic fair “Mistura” is held in Lima, presenting cooking shows and offering the best of Peruvian food to visitors. The fair is organized by the Peruvian Society of Gastronomy (Apega), a nonprofit association founded by the famous Peruvian chef Gaston Acurio.

Mistura is gaining more and more popularity and has chances to expand on an international level next year. Possibly the food fair will be held in Santiago (Chile), Cordova (Argentina), Bogota (Colombia), Miami, and New York (United States), as part of their efforts to conquer the international market. Foreign Visitors see a 7.8% Increase in 2015

Compared to 2014, foreign tourists increased 6% in the month of November, due to the hard work of the Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry. The head of this Ministry, Magali Silva, has been working to promote Peru as the ´Land of Hidden Treasures.´

Silva has also advocated for the diversification of tourists sites and the promotion of new markets. Furthermore, an initiative to facilitate awareness of Peruvian cuisine was started in the United States, which has sparked an interst in travel to Peru due to the growing fame of Peruvian food. Qali Warma will provide nutritious breakfast for Peruvian school kids

While presenting the new 2016 Qali Warma Procurement, Manual Peruvian Development and Social Inclusion Minister Paola Bustamante announced that in 2016, Qali Warma – a government-run program designed to provide breakfast to students from low-income households – will provide school breakfasts that contain 85% more quinoa than in the past, while an extra DHA component will be added to milk to support children’s brain and cognitive developments.
