Peruvian Minister of Culture Welcomes 2017 Volunteers

The Peruvian Minister of Culture, Salvador de Solar, welcomed the new volunteers for the 2017 cycle of the program ¨Soy Cultura¨ in Lima on February 23rd.

The program complements Solar´s goal of bringing the culture closer to the people.

The volunteers will work to design and disseminate information for publication on behalf of the Ministry of Culture.

Additionally, the volunteers will support the Ministry of Culture by doing work in the community. This work will include participating in various events (more…)

57th Marinera Contest in Peru

The 57th National Marinera Contest recently occurred in Peru. The marinera is a famous traditional dance of Peru, and continues to be a beautiful part of the Peruvian culture.

The contest was put on by Club Libertad from the 26th to the 29th of January, and it took place in Trujillo, a city in the north of Peru.

Furthermore, both domestic and foreign dancers competed at the popular event, and as many as 300 pairs participated in the competition on the final day. (more…)

Puno Celebrates its 348th Anniversary

Puno, a city in the south of Peru, recently celebrated its 348th Anniversary with many typical rituals and festivities.

The main event was a reenactment of the Legend of Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, an Incan couple that helped to found the Inca Empire and were the first rulers of the civilization.

The reenactment began with the couple on Uros, the floating islands on Lake Titicaca, along with some locals and enthusiastic tourists.

The participants, all dressed in typical Incan costumes, journeyed from the islands to Puno´s port on 60 rafts. (more…)

Peru´s TV Programs to Show in China

The National Institute of Radio and Television has recently declared that Peru´s TV programs will show in China.

This development stemmed from Peruvian president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski´s visit to China last month, when officials signed various agreements to promote a closer relationship between the two countries.

The chairman of National Institute of Radio and Television, Hugo Coya, asserted that this sharing of Peru´s TV Programs is a step towards the exchange of culture between China and Peru.

National Geographic does a special on Peru

Last Friday, July 8th, the first episode of a series about Peru aired on National Geographic Latin America.

The show plans to broadcast eight episodes in total, the theme being Peru´s up and coming gastronomy and rich culture.

Just a few months ago, National Geographic reached out to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism to see if it would be possible to do a project on Peru. The head of the department, Magali Silva, was more than thrilled for Peru to have this type of publicity.

Pre-Incan Paintings Discovered in Machu Picchu Area

About two weeks ago, a new discovery was found in the surrounding areas of Machu Picchu. Although the site was discovered over a century ago, the region is still producing surprises!

Cusco´s Cultural Department was exploring the areas around the famous Incan city and they found paintings that are believed to be older than the Incas.

The said paintings consist of the figures of a llama, a man, and another image. They were discovered on a road that leads straight to Machu Picchu.

Peru will be the film set for the show “Check In”

Peru was chosen as the place to shoot the second season of the popular online show “Check In”. This show is produced by Sixto George, a Puerto Rican producer and by Arnaldo Santiago, a travel blogger.

“Check In” will be broadcasted by the website:, the second most visited news website in the country. This website promotes tourist destinations by showing interaction between cultures in a funny way.

The film crew will stay in Peru from the 22nd until the 31st of July and will film in Lima, Cusco and Puno.

Cusco Readies for Inti Raymi

Inti Raymi, or Festival of the Sun, will take place this Friday, June 24th in Cusco, Peru. This is a celebration that the Incas observed every year, and the Cusco locals continue in their tradition.

As Cusco was the capital of the Incan Empire, the city held much significance, so this important festival was practiced here. The Inti Raymi festival is very similar to the New Years celebrations that we have at the beginning of January.

The Incas chose to celebrate at this time of the year because it marks the end of the harvest period and the start of the vernal equinox. (more…)

Lima hosts an exhibition showing crafts from all over Peru

The Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry in Peru is organizing a fair called “From our hands” with the purpose of promoting the handmade works from local artisans and to be able to turn this into a source of income for them.

During this year’s edition 123 artisans coming from Lima, Ayacucho, Cusco, Cajamarca, Piura, Puno, Junin, Arequipa, Huancavelica,Loreto, Amazonas, Apurimac, Callao, La Libertd, Pasco, Lambayeque, San Martin and Ucayali will participate.

Gran Teatro Nacional to honor Mother’s Day and Pachamama

On May 6th, 2016, the Gran Teatro Nacional will be hosting an event called, ‘’Pachamama: Canto y Rito a la madre’’ (Pachamama: Chant and Rite to mothers) in Lima. More than 40 talented artists will participate in this production with the intent to honor Pachamama and the many mothers around the world.

Violinist Ándres Chimango Lares, one of Peru’s most famous musicians, will be leading the event. Other musicians include Jaime Guardia, Manual Silva ‘Pinchincucha’, Porfirio Ayvar, Riber Oré, and numerous Andean artists.

Collection of Peruvian textile is shown in Italy

An exhibition of Peruvian textile is hown during the Milano Design Week in Italy held at Ventura Lambrate (VL 2016). There is a total of over 70 pieces made by 23 different artists from the Ayacucho and the Lambayeque regions.

It shows the latest contemporary design innovations brought by renowned talents in Peru, independent studios, galleries, academies and institutions from all over the world.
