Peru establishes new National Park in Amazon

Last Thursday, Peru officially announced the establishment of a new National Park in the Amazon. The Yaguas National Park extends 868,927 hectares in the far Northeastern rainforest of Peru.

The protection of the area is considered a great success for the preservation of natural resources, the high biodiversity and the sacred land of the local communities in Yaguas.

For the past decades, the region of Yaguas has been endangered by deforestation, illegal mining and the disappearance of important wildlife (more…)

Peruvian Tribal Leaders Join Leonardo DiCaprio in United States

Several tribal leaders from the Peruvian Amazon recently joined Leonardo DiCaprio in the United States to take part in the People´s Climate March.

Before the march, DiCaprio met with the different tribal leaders to discuss climate change and to pose for photos. It seemed that both the tribes and DiCaprio were honored to have the chance to meet one another.

7th Oil Spill this Year Occurs in the Amazon

In the region of Loreto, an oil spill took place on Friday, October 14th. This is the seventh oil spill to occur this year in the Amazon of Peru.

The spill was on the Northern Peruvian Pipeline on the first section of the Pipeline. PetroPeru, the company responsible, is in the process of investigation by the Agency for Assessment and Environmental Control.

The company asserts that it did all in its power to contain the spill once it began, and that the spill was not caused by them, but by a third party.

The bad living conditions of the River Dolphin in the Amazon

An ex trainer of the Huayrurín river dolphin in the Amazon has made a formal complaint about its living conditions. The dolphin lives in tanks with rough walls where they hurt itself.

This Amazon River dolphin can never completely recover from its injuries sustained in September 2015 due to the precarious living conditions in the Quistococha zoo in Iquitos.

The ex-trainer and complainant, Sandy Tassi, appeared in the Peruvian TV program Cuarto Poder to talk about the poor living conditions of the dolphin, including poor quality of water and the rough tank walls. (more…)

Andean products will enter Asia

An agreement has been signed between GB Corp (Peru) and Viss International (China) to facilitate the distribution of Peruvian products in Asia.

This agreement, made at the National Society of Industries facilities, allows for Andean products to enter the Asian market.

Peruvian producers, trained by Sierra Exportadora program, are from the Cusco, Junin, and Piura areas. Their target distribution locations will be Hong Kong, China, and Japan and their target market consists of 3 billion people.

New Species of Rain Frog in the Amazon

Researchers from Southern Illinois University, the University of Michigan, and the National University of San Antonio Abad in Cusco discovered a new rain frog species in Peru´s Amazon.

The researchers deemed the frog Pristimantis pluvialis, which was found in Manu National Park, an area that has a wide range of wildlife. This new discovery raised the number of amphibian species in the park to 156.

This newly discovered species is unique because it does not necessarily undergo a typical tadpole stage that most other amphibians go through. (more…)

Peru’s Travel Mart kicks off promo in Panama

The Peru Travel Mart is the ideal platform to promote the Peruvian products and to close deals with wholesalers and tour operators. This event will take place this year May 13-16 for the 23rd time, and will take place in the Lima Convention Center.

The exports and tourism promotion board (PromPeru) together with the commercial office of Peru (OCEX) started promoting the event with an informative workshop which will be held in Panama City.

Both the OCEX and PromPeru demonstrated the benefits of attending this special event. (more…)

Oil Spills cause contamination in Peru

Peru´s Ministry of Health recently announced a water emergency. Two oil spills occurred in the Amazon and Loreto areas, one of them on January 25th in the Imaza district of Loreto and the other on February 3rd in Morona. Both were along the Northern Peru Pipeline.

These oil spills contaminated water sources for many nearby communities, causing the Ministry of Health to declare a warning for 16 indigenous communities within the Amazon.

Sightings of Mashco Piro, an ‘Uncontacted’ Tribe in the Amazon, Causes Concern

As a country that lives with a high degree of cultural and natural diversity, Peru struggles with a number of unique problems that other countries do not even have to contemplate. What do you do, for example, when a tribe of indigenous people from the Amazon Jungle in the stages of initial contact, and highly susceptible to diseases, leave their home territory and move into other communities?

Peru passed a law in 2006 called the Law for the Protection of Indigenous or Native Peoples in Isolation and Initial Contact Situations. The intent of the law is to help protect people, mostly in the Amazon Rainforest (more…)
