Pope Francis in Peru: visit attracts tourists and induces additional income
Pope Francis stayed in Peru for four days, from January 18th until January 21st. More than 840,000 people traveled to places he has been to; among them Peruvian people as well as international tourists.
The expected income of the Pope’s visit lies between 80 and 100 million dollars. Ahora Perú, the Peruvian Hotels and Restaurants Association, announced that tourists spent their nights in up to 3-star hotels. However, tourists usually spend more money on leisure tourism than on pilgrimage tourism.
The visit of Pope Francis had been organized for seven months, involving various authorities like the police and the army. During his stay, the Pope visited Lima, Puerto Maldonado, and Trujillo.
Last Friday he went to Puerto Maldonado where he spoke to native communities of the Rainforest. During his visit to Trujillo, on Saturday, Pope Francis headed a mass at Huanchaco Beach and met different religious authorities. Besides, he participated in a Marian celebration that day.
On Sunday he met nuns at Las Nazarenas Church and went to the Cathedral of Lima as well as to the Archbishop’s Palace. Apart from that, Pope Francis visited a mass at Las Palmas Air Base.
