Last Sunday the Marathon of the Andes set a new record. The winning time was 2:18:30. Raul Pacheco finished nearly 150 meters ahead of second place winner Alene Emera, of Ethiopia. In the women’s division, Inés Melchor set a new record with a finishing time of 2:39:06. A special element of the win was that both Pacheco and Melchor are natives to Huancayo, the starting place.
Both winners performed well during running events this past year. Last September, for the second year in a row, Pacheco won the Mexico City Marathon and Melchor set a record in the Berlin Marathon that also took place at the end of September 2014.
It was the 30th edition of the Andes Marathon. Athletes from Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Kenya and Ethiopia participated in the 42 kilometer run.
