Thanks to the hard work of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism “Mincetur” and “INDECOPI” (the National Institute for the Defense the Competition and Peruvian Intellectual Property), Peru has now secured registration of its domestic spirit “pisco” as a protected geographical indication within the European Union.
Pisco is a fruit spirit traditionally produced in Peru, from the fermentation and distillation of grapes.
This means that pisco will now enjoy “immediate protection in the European Union market”. The Ministry expects this will help to “safeguard” the rights that Peru has on the denomination of the origin of Pisco at an international level.
The recognition does not mean that Chile will be prohibited from using the name “pisco” to market its grape liquor; however, it may not claim a geographical connection to that name.
