The governments of Peru and New Zealand recently reached an agreement. This new agreement will ensure that Peru´s dairy products will dominate the dairy sector on an international level.
The agreement is called the International Cooperation Project. This project focuses on boosting dairy producers in Peru, particularly the smaller ones in the areas of Puno, Cusco and Cajamarca.
The great potential of dairy production in these regions was recognized by New Zealand´s government. The Economic Development Minister, Steven Joyce, is the official who made the agreement with Jose Hernandez, Peru´s Agriculture and Irrigation Minister.
Furthermore, the project has funding that totals an amount of $4.68 million. With this investment, officials plan to improve the sector by providing more assistance and access to the producers in the Andean regions.
In addition, Steven Joyce asserted the importance of an increased profit for the smaller producers in the Andean communities of Peru.
With this new support for these communities, it is the hope of both the New Zealand and Peruvian governments that Peru´s dairy sector will eventually be a big player in the dairy industry.
