Peru: biggest gold producer Latin America
Having produced 151 tons of gold in 2017, Peru is the sixth biggest producer worldwide. At the same time, Peru produces the largest amount of gold in Latin America.
In 2017, half of the overall gold production of the country was produced in the regions of La Libertad (43 tons) and Cajamarca (33 tons). Arequipa produced 20 tons of gold and Ayacucho 12 tons. Considering the numbers of 2016 and 2017, Peru produced in total 304 tons of gold during these years.
However, Peru is also the second biggest silver-producing country in Latin America and worldwide. The country produced even more silver than gold: 4,304 tons in 2017. Peruvian cities contributing the highest silver output were Ancash (802 tons), Lima (794 tons) and Junin (781 tons). These three towns produced 55% of the overall silver production. When adding the total of 2016 and 2017, the numbers show that Peru produced 8,679 tons of silver during the last two years.
