Every year, Trip Advisor asks travelers their favorite destinations across the globe, and Peru’s Machu Picchu was 2016´s most popular site!

The list was of the top 25 landmarks worldwide in the year of 2016. The evaluation of travelers was done throughout the year, as millions of people posted various reviews on Trip Advisor.

Peru´s Exports and Tourism Promotion Board announced its joy of this significant recognition. The board has been working hard to make Peru an essential destination for tourists and travelers throughout the world.

The following is a list of the top 10 landmarks chosen in the Traveler´s Choice Awards:

  1. Machu Picchu, Peru
  2. Sheikh Zayed Mosque, United Arb Emirates
  3. Angkor Wat, Cambodia
  4. St. Peter´s Basilica, Italy
  5. Taj Mahal, India
  6. Mezquita Cathedral, Spain
  7. Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, Russia
  8. The Alhambra, Spain
  9. Lincoln Memorial, United States
  10. Duomo di Milano, Italy


The Inca Citadel Machu Picchu is located in Southern Peru, at approximately 100 km from the city of Cusco. The small but extraordinary ruin is located on a mountain at 2,430m. It is invisible from below and completely self-contained, surrounded by agricultural terraces sufficient to feed the population, and watered by natural springs.

Other travelers arrive hiking the Inca Trail, or, any of the alternative treks such as the Salkantay Trek or the Inca Jungle Trek.
