The 83 year old Julio de Almeida is the last prisoner on Ilha Grande, near the coast of Rio de Janeiro

Nowadays the island is a popular tourist destination, but for a century it was completely closed off. First it was used to house a leper colony. Later it turned into a top security prison. It was closed in 1994 but Julio still lives there.

He arrived on the island as a 27 year old in 1958.After a lengthy period of incarceration he was given a conditional release to remain on the island – a sentence which finally ends this year.

He won’t talk about his crimes. He says he regrets them. Reports tell that he was a multiple murderer. All his contemporaries have passed away and Julio is the only one who remains.
BBC News went to meet Julio at his home in the shadow of the ruins of Cândido Mendes prison.
