The Nazca Lines in Peru face a number of threats which can be difficult to deal with as they are spread over a vast expanse of desert. The threats are also wide ranging, including damage by activists, damage cause by Dakar Rally vehicles, land invasions and illegal mining, amongst others.
The good news is that the Lines and efforts to protect them have recently received a boost in the form of a $150,000 grant from the United States’ Ambassador’s Fund. The fund was set up to help finance preservation projects in developing countries.
The Nazca development project includes plans for conservation of the sites as well as other aspects such as an awareness campaign to promote the historical and cultural value pf the drawings, and a plan to improve collaboration between the different towns and districts.
