Dakar 2018: Dutch competitors receive help from community in Puno
On the route between Imata (Arequipa) and Mañaza (Puno), three Dutch competitors of Dakar 2018 noticed damage to their vessel.
The local community of Tincopalca, a small village belonging to the district of Santa Lucía, immediately prepared a place where pilot Richard De Groot, his co-pilot Beelen Gerardus and mechanic Johannes Hulsebosch could stay overnight.
Residents noticed the smoke of the vessel as it stopped 30 meters outside Tincopalca. Since a key spare part was missing, De Groot and his team failed to repair the vessel. Tincopalca is a remote zone with problems of telephone line and Internet what made it impossible to contact the Dutch relief team and the organizers of Dakar 2018.
The community offered accommodation in a local school. Many inhabitants carried blankets and food for the Dutch team. Apart from that, the community guarded the vessel during the night.
Finally, they managed to call the organizers of Dakar, and a unit of firemen tow the vessel away to the city of Juliaca.
