Inti Raymi, or Festival of the Sun, will take place this Friday, June 24th in Cusco, Peru. This is a celebration that the Incas observed every year, and the Cusco locals continue in their tradition.
As Cusco was the capital of the Incan Empire, the city held much significance, so this important festival was practiced here. The Inti Raymi festival is very similar to the New Years celebrations that we have at the beginning of January.
The Incas chose to celebrate at this time of the year because it marks the end of the harvest period and the start of the vernal equinox. They celebrated the start of a new year, said goodbye to the previous crop year, and began the transition to the new agricultural cycle.
The Inca king Pachakuteq initiated this festival long ago, and the people of Cusco keep the Inca´s tradition alive by participating in these festivities with pride and zeal.
Peru´s Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Magali Silva, has declared that the details of the festivities are all set in place. Cusco´s Municipal Company of Festivities organized the program for the 24th.
Being one of the most incredible celebrations in Cusco, it is a colorful and cultural experience that thousands attend from all across the nation.
