Landslide Cusco area and Machu Picchu Treks Closings

Landslide Cusco – The Regional Council of Cusco declared a state of emergency on Monday, February 24th in the Santa Teresa district, located in La Convencion province, after a massive landslide on Sunday February 23rd in the afternoon left at least several people dead, twenty missing, 300 homes destroyed and four bridges damaged.

The event was caused by heavy rain and a glacial collapse on the Salkantay Mountain. This hypothesis was proposed by Oscar Vilca Gómez who is a specialist in Hydrology and Glaciology. (more…)
