Researchers Discover New Species in the Sierra

Researchers discovered a new frog species in the Sierra region of Peru. Specifically, the frog species was found in the Pui Pui Protected Forest near Junin.

In honor of BBC broadcaster Sir David Attenborough, the new species was named Pristimantis attenboroughi. This frog lives at high altitudes of the Sierra in central Peru, and can grow anywhere from 14.6-23mm long.

Unfortunately, the Attenborough frog is considered endangered, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. (more…)

Cajamarca Kicks off Famous Carnaval

Cajarmarca kicked off their famous Carnaval on February 28th. The celebrations began with the ornate Qhapaq Ñan, a colorful display of costumes in the streets.

A delegation from the Municipality of Cajamarca opened the parade, followed by the Carnaval Queen, Ginna Pastor, aboard a beautiful float.

Thousands of people, tourists and locals alike, lined the streets to watch the Qhapaq Ñan. This is an event that generally attracts a lot of international attention (more…)

Peruvian Minister of Culture Welcomes 2017 Volunteers

The Peruvian Minister of Culture, Salvador de Solar, welcomed the new volunteers for the 2017 cycle of the program ¨Soy Cultura¨ in Lima on February 23rd.

The program complements Solar´s goal of bringing the culture closer to the people.

The volunteers will work to design and disseminate information for publication on behalf of the Ministry of Culture.

Additionally, the volunteers will support the Ministry of Culture by doing work in the community. This work will include participating in various events (more…)

Alternative Peru Promotes Sustainable Tourism in Peru

Natalie Lefevre and Eline Andries of Alternative Peru have developed a list that promotes sustainable tourism in Peru.

The list includes different smartphone apps and websites that give travelers different ideas on how to travel green, while supporting the local economy and giving back to local people.

For example, Alternative Peru´s list suggests how to lower your footprint while traveling by using the app GreenSeat, which calculates your carbon emissions. Another website that the group promotes is Eat Your World, a website dedicated to helping tourists (more…)

Peruvian University Students Design Rover for NASA Challenge

Peruvian University students have designed a rover for the NASA Human Exploration Challenge Rover Challenge. 17 students from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru have come together to form the competition group Deimos.

The group constructed the Deimos War, an ultra-lightweight rover that the team hopes will perform favorably when they go to the competition in late March.

Peru is not a country that has been known for its technological innovations. However, Deimos seeks to change this perception (more…)
