Santa Rosa de Lima Celebrations

On Tuesday, August 30th, Peru celebrated Santa Rosa de Lima. This is a celebration that honors Lima´s patron saint, Saint Rose of Lima.

Celebrations of this holiday consist of a procession that parades the image of Saint Rose through the streets of Lima, including the atrium of Lima´s Cathedral.

Additionally, a mass was held in the main plaza of Lima right in front of the Cathedral. Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani headed up the event.

Peru´s craft brewery hosts the 1st annual Santa Cruz Trail marathon

One of Peru´s leading craft breweries is Sierra Andina, a brewery located in Huaraz, a city in northern Peru. Sierra Andina will host the 1st annual Santa Cruz Trail marathon at the beginning of September.

The marathon will take place on September 3rd. The trail will run along the Cordillera Blanca and Huascaran National Park.

Although registered as a marathon (26.219 miles), the route will end up being a total of 27 miles. Runners from all across Peru and even other countries will dare to take this challenge for the first time.

Harvard University will analyze Peru´s Lady of Cao

Harvard University has decided to analyze the first female ruler of pre-Colombian Peru, otherwise known as Lady of Cao.

The purpose of this research is to determine if this woman was related to the other people found in the tombs, perhaps the bodies of the priests, maidens, or guards.

There were six other people found buried with the Lady of Cao, and they will also be analyzed at Harvard University.

The samples have already been taken from El Brujo site to Harvard University to undergo tests. Their findings will be available by 2017. (more…)

Peruvian coffee exports will increase in 2016

Peru´s Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry estimated that Peruvian coffee exports will increase greatly this year.

Last year, coffee exports reached $600 million, and this year the amount of exports is projected to reach $700. Peru exports to 48 different markets, the primary countries being the United States, Germany, and Belgium.

Furthermore, the director of Agribusiness Section, Angel Manero, commented on the low price of coffee at the moment. He said, ´´In the international context, we are talking about prices standing at nearly US $110 per quintal. (more…)

Peru´s New President: Children are the nation´s future

Last Sunday, August 21st, Peru celebrated Children´s Day. Across the country, various activities took place to honor children and promote their wellbeing.

Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, the recently sworn-in president of Peru, sent a special message on his Facebook account.

He stated, ´´We must take care of our children. Children are the nation´s future. Let´s take care of our children with all our hearts. That´s my wish. Happy Children´s Day.´´

PPK´s administration will invest in Peru ´s sports

After the summer Olympics just ended, sports are at the forefront of most people´s minds. Even PPK, the new president, has made a statement about investing in sports in Peru.

One of his goals is to provide more opportunities for free sports, and also to diversify the sports that are played in Peru, in addition to soccer and volleyball. He also plans to create a Ministry of Youth and Sports with the intent to get children started with sports early in life.

Doing this will require financial support, which PPK has thought through. (more…)

Peru´s Government will Promote Growth through Tourism

Peru´s Prime Minister, Fernando Zavala, declared that the new government will rely heavily on tourism to promote growth and build the economy.

Zavala made these statements as he addressed Congress with the intent to build confidence in the new government´s plans. These plans include increasing foreign tourists in Peru to 7 million by 2021, which is double the 3.5 million foreigners that entered Peru last year.

Additionally, the Prime Minister declared to RPP radio station, ´´We want to prioritize tourism, because this is where we can create new sources of growth and new jobs for Peru.´´ (more…)

Natural Areas in Peru to be protected

The State-run National Service of Natural Protected Areas insists that it aims to protect four areas in Peru. They will do this by putting them on the Green List of Protected Areas of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Being on this Green List ensures that the conservation and management of these areas is priority, and that recognition is given for the success of these sustainable sites.

The four areas that the National Service of Natural Protected Areas seeks to protect are the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve (more…)

The new Sol in Peru features the country’s Shipibo-Konibo ceramic

The Central Reserve Bank of Peru launched a new version of the one Sol coin (S/.1,00). This new coin features the Shipibo-Konibo ceramic, which was found in the Ucayali rainforest region.

The bank asserts that the coin is legal tender, meaning it can be used in all economic transactions. It will go into circulation together with the current versions of the one Sol coin.

In the centre of the obverse of the coin, you can see the National Coat of Arms with the inscription “Banco Central de Reserva del Peru”, the year of minting and an eight-sided polygon. (more…)

People Rally in Lima to Protest Violence against Women

On Saturday, August 13th, people rallied in Lima to raise awareness for women across Peru. The march, called ´´Not One Less,´´ was scheduled for 3 pm, drawing more than 50,000 people in the protest for violence against women.

More than 2,500 police officers were present at the event to provide protection and security if needed. The Special Services Division, Emergency Division, Basic Police Services Division, Green Squad, and Terna Group were all present to provide their services.

Gladys Tejeda of Peru can run with the world´s top 15

Peruvian runner Gladys Tejeda was part of Peru´s 2016 Olympic team in Rio and saw great success in the last few days. In fact, she proved that she is among the world´s top 15 long-distance female runners.
Competing in the Women´s Marathon, a distance of 42 kilometers, Gladys Tejeda finished with a time of 2:29:55. This placed her in the top 15 runners and the best runner from Latin America.

Tejeda also participated in the 2012 London Olympics, where she placed 42nd in the same race. This huge improvement is a great career accomplishment for the 30 year old runner. (more…)

Peru wins ISA Surfing Championships

Although the world´s eye is on the Olympics in Rio, another exciting sporting event took place in Costa Rica last weekend: the ISA Surfing Championships.

Peru´s national surfing team participated in this event, and they ended up taking first place in the championship! The players that contributed to this win were Alonso Correa, Joaquin del Castillo, Lucca Mesinas, Miguel Tudela, Anali Gomez, and Melanie Giunta.

Lucca Messina displayed an impressive performance in the male open, allowing Peru to dominate France and Costa Rica in the final scores. (more…)
