Award for leader of indigenous people in Peru

Last Tuesday, the leader of the Asháninka (indigenous people living in the rainforests of Peru) was awarded the Bartolome de las Casas Prize.This price was created in 1991 to support contribution to rights and values of indigenous people. Named after a Spanish priest who was know for his efforts in defending native people’s rights. Ruth Buendía was given the Bartolome prize for her great leadership of the Central Asháninka del Rio Ene (CARE). This local organization works together with 17 indigenous communities to defend the rights of the Asháninka people in the region. Buendía succeeded in stopping the construction of the Pakitzapango hydroelectric dam. (more…)
