Plaza de Armas

The Plaza de Armas of Catacaos is characterized by a statue of a man located in the center of the main square. It is the statue of Juan de Morí Alvarado who was a priest and vicar of the parish.

Iglesia San Juan Bautista

Iglesia San Juan Bautista

Being the main church of Catacaos, the Church of San Juan Bautista is actually distinguished as a Historical Monument. It is located close to the Plaza de Armas in Calle Comercio. The church was affected by the earthquake of 1912 and it was also affected by the El Niño phenomenon. The reconstruction of this neoclassical church, with its two towers and dome, was finished in 1995.

Calle Comercio Catacaos

This street is the main street of Catacaos. In the past, merchants sold their reeds and straw in the commercial street. Nowadays, one can find many fine arts, wood carvings as well as leather and ceramic products. The street is very popular among tourists looking to buy souvenirs.


Narihualá Catacaos

Narihualá is an archaeological site situated 17 km south of Piura in the Catacaos district. The site was the main settlement and capital of the Tallán, an ethnic group. On the 19th of February 2003, Narihualá was declared a National Cultural Heritage site.
