Peru is a country rich in opportunities for students of many diverse areas of study. As a massively bio-diverse and culturally diverse country, students of various scientific disciplines and of anthropology and archeology will find a heaven here. Students of the culinary arts will also enjoy the capital Lima for its new and exciting blend of cuisines from various countries and cultures.
Where you choose to study in Peru will depend on what it is you are interested in studying. For students with an interest in environmental studies, biology, conservation etc, then the Peruvian amazon in most likely where you will want to start researching your options. For anthropology and archaeology students, then Cusco and the other major archeological sites in the Andes and along the coast will be more for you. Culinary students should look at Lima, as well as students who study urbanization, poverty and social movements in cities, and topics related to the movement of rural farmers to the city for employment.
Peru is an interesting destination for a Spanish Program Abroad. There are several good and professional Spanish schools in Peru, especially in Lima and Cusco. Two of the most important Spanish schools in Lima are located in Miraflores (El Sol and Hispana), whilst in Cusco the well established AMAUTA Spanish school is probably your best choice, located in the city center of Cusco.
AMAUTA has a very good reputation and has been on the market in Cusco since 1998. At this school you can learn Spanish, starting with a one week survival course of even just a few hours of private classes, up till a semester Spanish Abroad with university credits. Spanish students at AMAUTA have the option to live with a local, Peruvian host family, or, to stay at the student residence of the school, located within the city center of Cusco. AMAUTA Spanish classes run at three locations: the city of Cusco, the Sacred Valley of the Incas and the Tambopata Rainforest. For more information: www.amautaspanish.com
For both individual travelers as for groups, AMAUTA offers interesting possibilities for volunteer work or social service work in Peru, mainly in the Cusco region. There is a list of volunteer opportunities available and volunteers choose the preferred field of their volunteer work: social, education, tourism, ecological, medical.
For many (young) travelers, social service or community service is an important component of their trip to Peru as they want to learn and give back to local, Peruvian society whilst living this important personal experience of living and working abroad and being immersed in Peruvian culture.
