This trek in the Cordillera de Los Frailes near Sucre is one of the most famous and popular walks in Bolivia. On this trek, we visit part of the spectacular mountain range of the Friars, the pre-hispanic road, the so-called Gorge of the Devil and the Crater of Maragua. Besides the fascinating views of the geological formations in the valley, you also have the opportunity to get to know the community of Maragua.
Sucre (2750m) - Chataquila (3650m) - Maragua (3100)
We begin our trek in the morning, setting out from Sucre in our private transportation. We drive to the town of Chataquila for about 1 hour through the countryside and the surrounding pine forest. Arriving in Chataquila, we begin our trek into the direction of the pre-hispanic road for about 2,5h in the beautiful scenery. At the end of the pre-hispanic road, our driver waits for us to take us to the Crater of Maragua for an approximately 50 minutes' drive. At the crater, we have time to have lunch and to explore the Maragua Crater, as well as the close by a local community. Afterwards, we make our way back to the city of Sucre in our private transportation (ca. 2,5h).
