Sandboarding at the Huacachina Oasis: Why Go
Huacachina is an oasis in the desert close to the southern coast of Peru. If you arrive by bus to Ica, it will only take ca. 15 minutes by car to the oasis. The huge sand dunes surrounding the green oasis not only make a fascinating landscape, they are also fun to explore! The top attraction at the Huacachina Oasis are rides into the dunes with so called sand buggies. The tours into the dunes take roughly 2 hours and can be done all day, although it is advisable to either take the tour in the morning to avoid the heat or in the late afternoon in order to see the sun set over the oasis.
The tour includes an adventurous ride through the dunes - it feels just like a roller coaster! Make sure your seatbelt is fastened well, because the sand buggy will make some spectacular moves. During the ride, the tour will stop at some point on top of a sand dune, where you will have the possibility to take a sand board and slide down the huge dune. Afterwards, the tour in the dunes continues to a spot above the oasis, where you can take pictures. What a fun ride! Please make sure you wear long pants, a shirt with long sleeves, and good shoes, to protect your skin from the lose sand while going down off the sand hills.
