Huaraz is situated between the mountain ranges Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Negra in the north-west of Peru and has an altitude of 3052 meters. After the 1970 earthquake, the city was rebuilt in American style. The streets are wide with concrete block boxes. That might not sound very charming, but Huaraz is definitely worth it! The city is an important starting point for trekking and adventure tours in the region.
Chavín de Huántar is an archaeological site near Huaraz. It gave the name to the local culture that dates back to the time between 850 BC. and 200 BC. The purpose of Chavín is still unknown. It is assumed that it used to be an oracle or cultural center of significant scale.
The tour will start at 9:00am. First, we will visit the Callejón de Conchucos. Then we will go to the town of Recuay, Ticapampa, Catac and visit the Querococha Lagoon. On our way, we will pass the Cordillera Blanca through the Cahuish Tunnel. From there we start going up to Chavín. Once arrived, we visit the archaeological center of Chavín. There we can enjoy galleries La Cabeza Clava, Lanzón monolitico and Portico de las Falcónidas. The tour ends at around 7:00pm in Huaraz.
