The Choquequirao Trek is one of Peru’s most spectacular and least visited trekking routes. Often called the sacred sister city of Machu Picchu, Choquequirao is larger, wilder, and far more remote.
Located high above the dramatic Apurímac Canyon, this Inca archaeological site receives only a fraction of the visitors that Machu Picchu does. The journey to reach it is physically demanding, but the reward is extraordinary: vast terraces, ceremonial plazas, and breathtaking mountain scenery almost entirely free of crowds.
This trek is ideal for adventurous travelers seeking a true off the beaten path experience, combining challenging hiking with fascinating Inca history and untouched Andean landscapes.
Over four days, you descend deep into the Apurímac Canyon and climb back up toward the Choquequirao ruins. The trek involves steep ascents and descents, making it physically challenging but immensely rewarding.
You camp in scenic locations overlooking the canyon, surrounded by towering mountains and dramatic landscapes. Mule support is included to carry camping equipment and supplies, allowing you to hike with a lighter daypack.
On day two and three, you explore the impressive archaeological complex of Choquequirao with your guide, learning about its history, architecture, and ongoing restoration.
Unlike more popular treks, you may share the entire site with only a handful of visitors.
Choquequirao is believed to have been an important political and ceremonial center during the Inca Empire. The site is still partially excavated, adding to its sense of mystery and discovery.
The 4 day trek focuses entirely on Choquequirao and returns via the same route.
Optional: The trek can be extended into a longer expedition that connects Choquequirao with Machu Picchu, creating one of the most epic multi day hikes in Peru.
