The Colca Canyon is one of the deepest canyons in the world and one of Peru’s most spectacular natural highlights. Located a few hours from Arequipa, this dramatic landscape offers breathtaking views, traditional Andean villages, and the chance to see the majestic Andean condor in flight.
This two day tour to the Colca Canyon allows you to explore the canyon at a relaxed pace, including the famous Cruz del Condor viewpoint, where condors often glide just meters above visitors.
With an overnight stay in Chivay, you experience both the stunning canyon scenery and authentic highland culture, without strenuous hiking.
You depart from Arequipa and travel through the Andean highlands, passing volcanoes, alpaca herds, and scenic viewpoints. The highest point of the route is Patapampa at approximately 4910 meters, offering panoramic views of surrounding volcanoes.
On day two, you visit Cruz del Condor, the most famous viewpoint of the Colca Canyon, where you have excellent chances of spotting Andean condors. You also visit traditional and picturesque villages like Yanque and Maca learning about local culture and agriculture. On the way back to Chivay we see the Pre-Inca tombs hidden in the mountainside and we visit the 'Litomaquetas', a stone structure used as an ancient agricultural clock.
An optional visit to the La Calera hot springs in Chivay is available on day one.
Colca Canyon is often compared to the Grand Canyon in the United States, but in some sections it is even deeper.
The Andean condor, one of the largest flying birds in the world, uses thermal currents rising from the canyon to soar effortlessly through the sky. Morning hours offer the best chances to see them. Optional: Instead of returning to Arequipa on day two, you can continue directly to Puno, making this tour a convenient connection between destinations.
