Choquequirao: Trek to so-called Sacred Sister of Machu Picchu

Only a 4-hour bus ride away from the city of Cusco you can find the amazing Inca ruins of Choquequirao, another “lost city of the Inca’s.” Choquequirao is bigger than Machu Picchu but almost “undiscovered” (like any other remote part of the Andes here in Peru). While the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is so popular that it is very hard to get Inca Trail Tickets, we could not join a group of hikers to do the Choquequirao Trek, simply because there were no groups available for the date we wanted to go. Unlike Machu Picchu, Choquequirao (or Choqueqirow) was not thoroughly explored and excavated until the 1970’s.

How it is possible that Machu Picchu has 1,4 million visitors every year and Choquequirao only 5,5 thousand? The answer lies in the remoteness of this archaeological site. Of course, this is what makes it so unique too. During the Choquequirao Trek, you will get a more intense feeling of achievement; and, at the same time, an immense appreciation of Peruvian nature. How it is possible the Incas have built this magnificent city here, at this incredible location in the saddle of a high Andean ridge, 3000, above sea level and 1,500 meters above the roaring waters of the Apurimac River? The Sacred or the Lost Sister City of Machu Picchu – as Choquequirao is often called – is only accessible through an (at least) 4-day hike through the beautiful mountains and valley passing over the wild Apurimac river. Inside Scoop on Booking Inca Trail Peru

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is one of the most popular trekking routs in Peru. This is not only because it leads to one of the most visited and renowned Incan sites, Machu Picchu. But also because it lets the trekker discover a landscape full of wonders and beautiful Peruvian nature.

The 43km Inca Trail trek starts in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, near the beautiful city of Cusco. From here, the trek to Machu Picchu continues in the magnificent Andes along ancient Inca ruins. While on this incredible journey, trekkers will experience Peruvian biodiversity first-hand as they dive into a variety of microclimates, flora and fauna, typical Andean highlands, as well as the cloud forest of the Amazon.

There are, however, some challenges! Before reaching the site of Machu Picchu, the traveller has to ascend an altitude of 4600 m, climbing over three Andean passes. (more…)

Why do you need a Boleto Turistico in Cusco and what is it?

Many of the most popular tourist attractions in Cusco (Peru) such as the ruins of Sacsahuaman and the ones in the Sacred Valley (Pisac, Ollantaytambo), but also the cathedral, the Temple of the Sun, a few museums and others, can only be visited when you have a ‘Boleto Turistico’ (officially called BTG: Boleto Turistico General). This Boleto Turístico is a ticket that allows you to enter a number of well-known tourist sites in and around Cusco. The money you pay is for the municipality of Cusco and mainly used to maintain the archaeological sites.

What is the 2018 price of the Boleto Turistico?

For 130 Peruvian Soles (approx US$42,-) the Boleto Turistico grants you access to 16 different tourist attractions in and around the city of Cusco. It is valid for 10 days. Note that the Boleto is just an entrance ticket. It does not include extra services like guides or transport. The price for students with a valid Student ID or an ISIC Card is 70 Soles (aprox $21,-)

Paragliding Peru : Learn how to fly in Cusco!

Peru is a great destination for adventurous tours, especially the area of Cusco. Travellers in Peru can choose from many options: ATV tour, river rafting, bungee jumping, hiking, biking and so much more. However, the tour that appealed to me the most was paragliding in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Waiting for the wind to change…
I had already enjoyed the Sacred Valley with both feet on the ground during the tour to the Inca ruins and the traditional markets in, among others, Pisac and Chinchero. Now I had the opportunity to see the amazing landscape from a different perspective: from the sky hanging from a parachute.
