Exploring the Cusco Surroundings

Cusco – the beautiful city, nestled in the Andes in Southern Peru – is the perfect starting point for hikes and visit to interesting Inca sites and beautiful nature. While traveling to the Sacred Valley or the Southern Valley, you can’t stop wondering about the impressive architecture of the Inca culture. Here are some tips for Exploring the Cusco surroundings.

First things first: Cusco Tourist Ticket

If you want to visit the archaeological sites in the surroundings of Cusco, first buy the tourist ticket or the so-called Boleto Turístico. I would recommend buying a ticket that is valid for ten days that will allow you to visit everything. The ticket costs S./ 130, however, if you have an ISIC student card, you only need to pay S./ 70. Visit Maras and Moray in the Sacred Valley of the Incas

When visiting the Cusco area while traveling in Peru, the Sacred Valley of the Incas is a must-see. Many travelers visit Pisac, Ollantaytambo, and Chincheros while doing a Sacred Valley Tour. However, there are also two two lesser known sites called Maras and Moray. Here you read why we recommend you Visit Maras and Moray in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Just 31 miles Northwest of Cusco (Peru) lies Moray. Moray is the number 20 of 127 top attractions to visit in the Cusco region ranked by the Tripadvisor. It is a must see for everyone. First photographed in 1931, these particular ruins have been carved into the earth just about 100 feet deep or more.

The most popular theory is that this site once was an Agricultural Laboratory to the Incas. With sixty percent of the world’ stood crop originating from the Andes the theory seems to fit well. Pollen studies have proven that the earth from each basin was once imported from different regions in Peru. From top to bottom the temperature can reach 20 degrees Fahrenheit and with each level in these circular basins being 2 meters apart one would assume it was apart of these experiments.

Interesting Facts For your visit to the Sacred Valley in Cusco
Thursday December 31, 2015 - Posted by

As this is my third stay in Peru – in Cusco – I am sometimes tempted to think that I’ve seen and done it all. This is, of course, far from the truth. When my sister and brother-in-law decided to come visit me, I got the chance to explore several famous sites in the surroundings of Cusco with them for the first time, such as the day we spent in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, just outside of the beautiful city of Cusco. We took our time and lots of pictures, and got to explore Ollantaytambo, the Salinas, Moray, Chinchero and many miles of spectacular scenery in between.

One of our nicest days started in Cusco where we took a combi (a mini-van) from Puento Rosario, in Cusco. As it was a holiday, seats weren’t easy to find, but we were soon on our way out of the city toward the steep hillsides and incredible views of the Sacred Valley. (more…)
