Semana Santa in Cusco & Special Sacred Valley Tour
Semana Santa has already started in Cusco, it actually kicked off yesterday with Domingo de Ramos, Palm Sunday. or Domingo de Ramos with the traditional blessing of the palm at the Plaza de Armas early in the morning.
The entire Holy Week is filled with celebrations and processions. It is an important week for the catholic society in which they remember the death and resurrection of Jesus. And in Cusco this celebration is also associated with “El Señor de los Temblores” or Lord of the Earthquakes, protector of the city.
Then Holy Monday or Lunes Santo is the main day in Cusco, today is the day of the procession of the Lord of the Earthquakes. The statue is taken out of the church for the public to adore and to thank him for his protection. The statue is called black Christ since it has turned dark of the candles and the fumes in the times it was forgotten.
The next important day during this Holy Week or Semana Santa is Good Friday or Viernes Santo. The celebration starts at Plaza San Francisco, and continues to Saqsaywaman. This day the local people also prepare and to server 12 different typical dishes to honour the last supper.
Cusco will be very crowded with both local and foreign tourists. So if you want a good spot to see all the festivities, make sure to go early to the Plaza de Armas to get a spot on one of the little balconies. This way you will have a good view of the Plaza. Also make sure to make your hotel reservations well-ahead since Cusco will be over-crowded.
