Trip Review of Salkantay Trek

Day 1 Salkantay Trek
The day starts early. At 6 a.m. Daniel, our guide from Dos Manos Peru Travel Agency, picks us up at our hostels in Cusco. Still tired, every one of the group soon dozes away. Some 2 hours later it is time to wake up as we native to the town of Mollepata. Here we get off the bus to have breakfast and to buy a few snacks for our upcoming Salkantay trek.1,5-hour 1,5 hour ride brings us to the start point of our walk in Cruzpata. We meet the horse boys that will join us on our trip. They organize the horses for us and put our bags on top of them. Then the first 3 hours of our hike starts. This will be an easy walk, meant to get used to the altitude. We reach our lunch place and have a little break. Then we continue for another 2 hours to Soraypampa. A nice stretched out area where we will have dinner and camp for the night at almost 4,000 meters above sea level.

Day 2 Salkantay Trek
The horse boys wake us up at 5 o’clock by bringing us coca tea in our tent. Having a hot drink after an ice cold night makes waking up much easier. After breakfast, we start day 2 of the Salkantay Trek. This is said to be the toughest day of the hike. The first hour is still manageable for all the people in my group. Then it starts to really go up steep. For three hours we climb up, some people struggling from altitude sickness, others from not being in shape. Eventually, we all manage to reach the top. Here we have a great view of the huge white pyramid, the peak of the Salkantay. We have a good rest and lunch and continue our walk. Downhill this time, for another three hours. Collpabamba is where we’ll spend the night. This night it is not cold, this is almost jungle! We can actually hear the sounds of animals and I see fireflies!

Day 3 Salkantay Trek
Again we wake up at 5 o’ clock to receive our hot cup of tea in bed. After another good breakfast, we start the day of hiking. This day is mainly a downhill trip. It gets hot along the way. We reach the jungle and take off our jackets. A shirt will do in this area. First, we reach the village of La Playa, where you can visit beautiful waterfalls. After hiking for a few more hours, a car takes us to the village of Santa Teresa. We leave our stuff at the camp for that night and head to the Hot Springs. Here we take our first shower in days and jump into the hot pools. All aches and muscle pains seem to have disappeared after a few hours in the pool. A great thunder storm breaks out and we decide to head back to the campsite. After dinner, we have a bit of a party in the local ‘discotheque’ where we meet other hikers from other travel agencies in Cusco. This campsite, with the hot and humid weather, is the ideal location for some party time.

Day 4 Salkantay Trek
We get to sleep in this morning! Wake up time is 7.30. All fresh and ready to go we head our way to Aguas Calientes. We walk for about three hours before getting there. This night we get to sleep in a hotel. We have the afternoon to explore the town of Aguas Calientes and come back together to have dinner at a nice restaurant. Most decide to go to bed early, other have a drink in town before heading to bed.

Day 5 Salkantay Trek
We wake up at 04.30 have breakfast in the hotel. The hotel is prepared for early morning guests and serves foods at this funny hour. Soon after, we are in a long line of people trying to get in a bus. This bus takes us up to Machu Picchu in half an hour. You can also walk up to Machu Picchu, but this won’t be a very interesting hike. Just along the road, full of buses. Arriving at Machu Picchu we get into another line to access the site.

And then finally we’re in! Days of hiking through heat and cold, we made in to the sacred site.  This is truly one of the most magical places I’ve ever seen. After a two hour guided tour  we spent a few more hours exploring the ruins and relaxing.

In the afternoon we take the train back to Cusco, where we are met at the train station and dropped off at our Cusco accommodations again.

Doing the Salkantay Trek was a unique and amazing experience!
