Few archaeological discoveries in the world are as mysterious as the Peruvian Nazca Lines.
These enormous figures are drawn into the desert plains near the city of Nazca in southern Peru, along the South Coast at about 6 hours to the south from Lima. Some of those lines measure hundreds of meters and can only be fully seen from the air.
For decades archaeologists and scientists have tried to understand how and why these geoglyphs were created. There are two days to see the Nazca Lines: from a small airplane or from a ‘mirador’ or viewpoint!
Who Created the Nazca Lines?
The Nazca Lines were created by the Nazca civilization, which lived in the region between approximately 200 BC and 600 AD.
The figures were made by removing the dark stones on the desert surface, revealing the lighter soil underneath. This simple technique allowed the designs to remain visible for thousands of years.
The extremely dry climate of the Nazca desert helped preserve the lines.
Famous Figures of the Nazca Lines
More than 300 geoglyphs have been discovered in the Nazca desert.
Some of the most famous include:
- The Hummingbird
- The Monkey
- The Spider
- The Condor
- The Astronaut
In addition to animal figures there are also geometric shapes and long straight lines that extend across the desert.
How to See the Nazca Lines
The best way to see the Nazca Lines is by taking a scenic flight over the Nazca desert.
Small aircraft depart from the Nazca airport and fly over the main geoglyphs. The flight usually lasts about 30 to 40 minutes.
Each passenger receives a window seat so that both sides of the plane can clearly see the figures.
Theories About the Nazca Lines
The purpose of the Nazca Lines is still debated. Several theories exist.
Some archaeologists believe the lines had religious or ceremonial significance.
Others suggest they were connected to water rituals in a region where water was extremely valuable.
Another theory proposes that the lines may have been used as astronomical markers, although this idea remains controversial.
Despite decades of research, the Nazca Lines remain one of the world’s greatest archaeological mysteries.
