Do Not Forget These 5 Items for Your Trip to Cusco Peru
When you prepare for your trip to Peru it’s helpful to read some suggestions about what to bring to Peru. Maybe you will participate in a volunteer project in Peru, take Spanish lessons in Cusco, travel in Peru, or do the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu…
Whatever your main goal will be, there are a few items you need to bring with you. However, no problem if you forget any items as you can buy most of them in Lima or Cusco as well.
Cusco is at 3, 400 meters above sea level, and also other well-known tourist destinations in Peru such as Arequipa, Puno, Lake Titicaca, Huaraz, and Machu Picchu (although a bit lower) are located high above sea level. This means that you are a lot closer to the sun. If you do not normally use sunblock at home, it will be necessary here. After 15 minutes in the sun, you may already be turning into a red tomato if you do not use sunblock.
A Hat and Sunglasses
Along the same lines, a cap or some kind of hat will be necessary if you would like to spend long hours in the sun in Peru. Sunblock can only protect you for a limited amount of time, so it is best to wear long sleeves, pants, a hat, and sunglasses to cover your eyes from the harsh sunrays.
A Rain Jacket or Coat
The weather in Cusco and the Peruvian highlands change very rapidly. During rainy season, from November to April, it may be a beautiful day with the sun shining and then within a matter of minutes a large storm cloud covers the whole city. It is good to always be prepared with a good rain jacket that will keep you warm and not let you get wet. During the dry season, from May to October, it is normally very sunny throughout the day, but once the sun goes down the temperatures drop dramatically. Always take a heavy coat to keep you warm once the sun goes away.
Good Hiking Shoes
Most likely you will be doing some kind of Trek or Tour during your trip to Peru, such as the Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek, or others. Whether it be hiking a mountain or just walking the cobblestone streets in the city of Cusco, you will need some good shoes that help you not to slip. Especially during the rainy season, sometimes the city streets feel more like a slip and slide, and if you do not want to be skating your way down then good shoes are a must.
Throughout your travels in Peru you may find yourself in many places where you need to clean your hands. Whether it be after taking a public bus or taxi, after using the bathroom, or before eating in a restaurant. Many times public restrooms do not have soap. If you like washing your hands with more than just water, it is recommended to always keep a bottle of hand sanitizer with you.
