Huayna Picchu Hike: A new perspective on Machu Picchu

All you need to know about the Huayna Picchu Hike

How many times have you seen a picture like the above of Machu Picchu? Probably numerous times, just like me. Before I traveled to Peru, I always dreamt of visiting Machu Picchu and taking a picture like that myself– and I did! But did you know, that the mountain you see here, is actually NOT called Machu Picchu?

What is Mountain Machu Picchu?

I only found this out on my awesome trip to Peru. On these famous pictures of the famous Inca Citadel “Machu Picchu” you see so often, the mountain Machu Picchu is actually behind us! The impressive archaeological site is only named AFTER the mountain Machu Picchu! The fun fact is that the mountain you see in our picture above is called Huayna Picchu or Wayna Picchu! In Quechua – the language that the Inca’s spoke, – Huayna Picchu means “young peak,” while Machu Picchu means “old peak.” (more…)

The best Tips to Prepare for Travelling in Peru

If the big day is almost there and you are ready to start the preparations for your Trip to Peru, this post is for you!  On our website, you can also find some interesting Travel Tips including a Getting Ready for your Trip to Peru Section. But here are the most important ones. So get ready and Prepare for Travelling to Peru!

Tip 1: Book in Advance what Needs to be Booked in Advance!

Of course, if you prefer to see where the wind takes you during your travels to Peru, you don’t need to plan every minute details of your trip beforehand. However, if you have your heart set on seeing some of Peru’s most famous and popular sites such as Machu Picchu, you MUST book in advance to avoid grave disappointment upon arrival. The best example, of course, is the Famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu……which MUST be booked at least 4 to 6 months in advance for high season (May, June, July, August).

This must be done at a licensed travel agency in Cusco. If you plan to visit Peru later (or earlier) in the year, 1-3 months ahead might be enough if you are lucky). This is because the Peruvian government limits the entrances to 500 per day (including guides and staff) in order to help preserve the beautiful Inca trail!

Pre-booking recommendations also include all  Machu Picchu Tours such as train tours to Machu Picchu and during some times of the year, entrances to Machu Picchu itself can sell out (always check!). If you don’t have 4 -6-month notice of your trip, you can always consider one of our alternative treks to Machu Picchu, like the Salkantay, Lares, or the super-fun Inca Jungle Trek!

If you don’t have 4 -6 month notice of your trip to Peru or you plan a last-minute visit, you can always consider one of our alternative treks to Machu Picchu, like the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu, the beautiful Lares Hike, or the super-fun Inca Jungle Trek!

Peru: 3 Day Hikes off the Beaten Path

The Cusco region in Peru is known for its soaring peaks and stunning scenery. For this reason, there are so many great hikes that you can do in here, such as the Inca Trail or the Salkantay Trek. For those treks, you need a travel agency (especially for the Inca trail as only official operators can offer this trek).*

But there are also some really nice smaller hikes you can do on your own. Tackling the Cusco region can be a bit daunting so make sure you are well prepared. With some many mountains and so many unmarked trails left by the Incas, it´s hard to know just where to start.

But for those with an adventurous spirit, interested in exploring this awesome area, we have prepared a list of three day hikes in Cusco, off the beaten path. These hikes are not quite as well-known to the average tourist, so you can enjoy the tranquility of nature without being surrounded by hordes of people! Make sure you are well prepared.
