The feast of Virgin of Candelaria is the biggest event in the Peruvian folklore, held annually in February in the city of Puno in honor of Virgin of Candelaria, the patron saint of the city of Puno. This year 2014 is the 50th birthday celebration of this festival.
The celebration begins with the realization of the novenas (devotional exercise practiced for nine days to get grace), which are held in the sanctuary of the Virgin. Eight days later the commemorative activities start the feast of the Virgin . The words ‘sleep’ and ‘fatigue’ do not seem to exist during the days preceding the party. Days before, on anytime of the day, we hear varied rhythms of the region on the streets and the dancers who, with a beer in their hands, practice the steps of their dances to participate in the contests of folk dance.
