Peru's capital, Lima, was once reputed to be the most beautiful city in Spanish America. Lima today retains much of its charm, despite its rather shapeless expanse of modern suburbs and dusty shantytowns that run for miles in each direction along the Panamerican Highway. Long established as Peru's seat of government, the city is home to more than eight million people, over half of who live in relative poverty without decent water supplies, sewage or electricity.

There is still a certain elegance to the old colonial centre, and the city hosts a string of excellent museums. The great museums of the world are found in the capitals, and Lima is one such place. In Lima there are the two most important museums of this part of America, showing the best pieces and collections of pre-Colombian art of Peru. For this reason we have combined a Lima city tour with a visit to your preferred museum: the Museum of Archaeology OR The Peruvian Gold Museum

The National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History of Peruis housed in a Vice Regal mansion, once a residence of both the Viceroys and Liberators, and considered the Museum “par excellence” of Peru. Here they conserve the famous stone monuments of the formative era about 1000B.C (The Raimondi Stelar and the Tello Obelisk). The museum houses the most important textile collection in Peru that displays weavings since the Pre-Ceramic period until the Inca era. Also on display is an important collection of metals from Ancient Peru.

Peruvian Gold Museum
The collection “Mujica Gallo” has become known as the Gold Museum of Peru. We have a guided visit of this collection of gold pieces from diverse pre-Columbian cultures which exhibits works in gold of objects and jewels of incalculable value. The fame of the gold of Peru attracted numerous European adventurers 500 years ago and was the cause of the end of the Inca Empire and gave origin to the Spanish Vice Regalty of Peru. Moreover, this museum exhibits an important display of ancient and modern arms that is considered one of the best it its kind. Situated in the district of Santiago de Sucre, the tour allows us to appreciate part of the residential zone of modern Lima.

Itinerary

We start by visiting the “Huaca Pucllana” a magnificent ceremonial and administrative centre of the Lima Culture, constructed in the 14th century, and considered by the Incas a “ñaupallaqta” or sacred town.

We visit the Historic Centre of Lima: Paseo de la República, Plaza San Martín, Plaza Mayor, Government House, Basílica Cathedral, the Archbishop’s house, and the Municipality, and ancient streets with colonial mansions and balconies in Moorish style.

We will visit the San Francisco convent and church, the biggest complex of colonial art in America, its choir and the library of the monks, the Sacristy (with paintings of Zurbaran and Rivera) the principal Cloister’s Courtyard, decorated with Sevillan tiles from the 16th century, Moorish arches, and the Catacombs, subterranean crypts from the Colonial era.

The tour continues in the most traditional residential areas: El Olivar de San Isidro, with olive trees brought from Spain in the 17th century, the Central Park of Miraflores and Larco Mar, the symbol of modern Lima, a centre of attractions, with restaurants, shops and a privileged point to appreciate the spectacular panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean.

Finally, we will take a guided tour around either the Museum of Archaeology or the Peruvian Gold Museum.
