Huchuy Qosqo (UCQ)

Huchuy Qosqo

Description

This is a wonderful trip if you like hiking, being in the middle of nowhere and being surrounded by nature!  We pass through the ‘X-Zone’, a site where few tourists visit even though it is less than one hour from Cusco. It consists of a small hill covered with stones and littered with caves.  These stones were placed here by ancient people and have been very interestingly transformed into temples, and underground and carved passages.

The main attraction on this trek are the ruins of Uchuy Q’osqo (small Cusco), situated near to the Sacred Valley above Calca.  It is known as small Cusco because it is said to mimic the exact shape of Cusco but on a much smaller scale.  From the ruins are spectacular views over the mountain range Cordillera de Vilcanota.  It is a fascinating site where the Inca chief Viracocha lived. The mummy that was found here is said to be of him. The ruins are part stone and part adobe; some of the houses are ‘post-Inca’, but in Inca-style, and there is a Spanish-style reservoir.

First Day
07:00 A.M.: Departure from AMAUTA, by car to X-Zone
07:30 A.M.: Visit to the X- Zone, the X-Zone; this is a rocky limestone formation that has little holes due to erosion. These stones are placed by ancient people and have been very interestingly transformed into temples and underground and carved passages. These passages have figures of sacred value.
After this short visit we will take the old Inka's path that leads from Sacsayhuaman to Uchuy Qosqo. Formerly, this path was used to transport stones for the construction of Sacsayhuaman. The path passes a lot of small lakes and hamlets where people are walking around with their llamas and alpacas.
12:30 P.M. : Arrival at Qoricocha Lagoon
13:00 P.M. : Lunch
14:30 P.M. : We will continue the hike to Uchuy Qosqo.
17:30 P.M. : Arrival at Uchuy Qosqo, where we will have a look around and where we will have a big bonfire and camp for the night!

Second Day
07:00 A.M.: Breakfast
08:00 A.M.: We will continue hiking. This route offers a spectacular view over the
mountains Nevado la Veronica and over a part of Nevado de Salkantay.
Furthermore, we will walk to the village Tauca, where we will have lunch. Afterwards (if there is time enough) we will go to Chincheros. From there we will be transferred back to Cusco.
17:00 P.M.: Arrival at Chincheros and return to Cusco.
