Amazon River celebrated as new wonder of nature

(31 January, 2012)

People in north-eastern Peru's Loreto region will paddle 2,000 canoes on the Amazon River to celebrate its official inclusion in the world’s New Seven Wonders of Nature.

Yvan Vasquez, head of the regional government, announced Sunday that the March 5 event is co-organized with Peru’s Export and Tourism Promotion Board Promperu and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism.

"This will be a super production that will show the world the wonders of the Peruvian Amazonia," Vasquez told Andina news agency.

Native communities will delight visitors with their music and dance while a fireworks display and the unveiling of a bronze plaque will be part of celebrations as well, he added.
