An unforgettable trip to the Tambopata jungle in Peru!

Trip review

After three months in Cusco – where I´m living at the moment for my internship at AMAUTA Spanish School – I finally made a tour that I really wanted to do since I arrived to Peru: a trip to the Tambopata Rainforest.

From Cusco you can get to Puerto Maldonado, from where all tours start, by plane or by bus. Since I’m on a budget, I took the nigh tbus from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado. It should take about 10 hours, but our bus was delayed and we arrived 3 hours later. Luckily we didn´t even notice because we were sleeping in our comfortable ´cama´ chairs.

Upon arrival, early in the morning, a representative of the partner of Dos Manos Peru in Puerto Maldonado was waiting for us in the bus terminal. He brought us to his travel agency and there we met our guide , Marco, for the next 3 days and a monkey named ´Nena´. Of course this was pretty hilarious for my travel friends, as my name is Nena as well!

After the necessary pictures with the monkey it was finally time to go deep into the Peruvian jungle! First we had a boat trip on the Madre De Dios river for almost an hour. To get till our lodge, we walked for almost two hours through the mud (tip: never forget your rain boots when taking a tour to the rainforest). Even before arriving to our lodge we had already seen some caymans. Amazing.

Lake Sandoval

After dinner on our first night we went to bed early as next morning we would wake up at 4.00. We did, and we walked in the rainforest for hours hoping to see some parrots. There were actualy many of them and we could come real close.

The rest the day we spent walked in the jungle and we enjoyed an amazing sunset with a boat trip on the lake Sandoval.

The next day we woke up early again, this time to see otters in the lake. Our guide told us it´s rare to see otters, however, we were lucky and saw two of them.

Monkey Island

We finalized our weekend in the Tambopata jungle with a visit to the famous Monkey Island. Next morning it was time to say goodbye.

We went by boat to Puerto Maldonado and again by bus to Cusco.

This was an experience I had dreamt about before traveling to Peru and it’s an experience I will certainly never forget.
